Evolutionary Decision Support Tool: The overall concept is the development of a decision support framework that self-learns (evolves) based on machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence, See Figure 2 The model would use input from already existing data (Structural Health Monitoring, SHM), climate data etc.) on various infrastructural elements (bridges, slopes, tunnels and crossings to provide decision support to a rail infrastructure owner across multiple asset types. This model is highly interdisciplinary as it would incorporate the traditionally disparate infrastructure management and operators with systems developed for the computer and data storage industry.
An important task would focus on developing the architecture of the evolutionary decision support framework to incorporate (near) real-time data inputs from a range of infrastructural elements across the network. Once the framework architecture is defined the work will focus on implementing machine learning tools to capacity modelling and risk assessments.
